Mr and Mrs Smith… and the Great Bed-Making Debate

At Mr and Mrs Smith HQ, there’s a long-standing (and very real) debate — and no, it’s not about what’s for dinner (because Thermomix already sorted that). It’s about something far more controversial…

The Bed.

More specifically: making the bed. 🛏️

Rachel is a fluff-the-pillows, tuck-the-sheets, smooth-the-doona kind of gal. She’s all about big square pillows, three perfectly layered sleeping pillows, a cushion (or five — who’s counting?), and a soft, textured throw blanket folded just-so at the foot of the bed. There’s a method to the madness: it’s all about layers, textures, and that final pop of colour that ties it all together. Think warm tones, matching linen, and magazine-worthy vibes. Dreamy. Soft. Put-together.

Greg?

Well… Greg just wants somewhere to sleep. If the doona happens to be vaguely covering the mattress, that’s close enough to “made” in his books. He insists there are far too many things on the bed — and every night like clockwork, he performs his dramatic, over-the-top ritual of removing every decorative pillow one by one with exaggerated sighs. It's like a bedtime cardio session. 😆

And let’s face it — Greg doesn’t make the bed. Not really. But if it’s not made? Oh, he’s absolutely going to have a whinge about it. 😂

The one exception? Sheet-changing day. Every week, without fail, Greg shows up like clockwork to help Rachel change the sheets. He might not love the pillow mountain or the “five-step fold” of the throw, but he knows the drill. And if nothing else, he knows not to fold the fitted sheet wrong. (Progress.)

It’s become this funny little rhythm of ours — a perfect mix of effort, eye-rolls, and unspoken teamwork. And honestly? That’s what home is all about.

But here’s the thing: making the bed isn’t really about the pillows or the throw rugs or even who does it better(although Rachel would probably argue she definitely does).

It’s about those small, seemingly insignificant rituals that somehow anchor the day.

It’s about the comfort of starting with something complete — something calm — even if the rest of the house is a whirlwind of laundry piles, lost socks, and “what’s for dinner?” questions. It’s about walking past your bedroom, catching a glimpse of that neatly made bed and thinking, yeah, we’ve got this.

It’s about creating a sense of order when life feels a little bit messy. It’s about reclaiming a tiny moment of control in a day filled with unpredictable toddler moods, endless errands, or back-to-back work calls. It’s about choosing to care, even when it’s easier not to.

And it’s about leaning into the little things that bring joy… even if it drives your partner just a little bit mad. (Looking at you, Greg. And those cushions.)

Because for us, making the bed is no different from why we love the Thermomix — it’s about building a life that works for us. It helps bring order to the everyday. It simplifies the “What’s for dinner?” chaos. It turns ordinary into extraordinary with just the push of a button.

Whether we’re fluffing pillows or prepping risotto, it’s all part of creating a home that feels lived-in, loved, and intentionally ours. One that says, “we care.” One that feels warm, welcoming, and just a little bit fancy — even if we’re still in pyjamas at 3pm and have no idea what day it is.

Because in the end, it’s not just about a made bed or a cooked meal — it’s about the life you’re building in between.

o from our home to yours — whether your bed is styled like a five-star hotel or flung together after school drop-off (with a toy dinosaur still hiding under the doona), here’s to the rituals, the routines, and the realities of real-life love.

Here’s to the little things that make a house a home.To the Sunday sheet changes, the “too many pillows,” and the quiet, unspoken teamwork that happens in the in-between.To the way one person always makes the bed… and the other always complains about it. 😅To the fact that love doesn’t always look like grand gestures — sometimes, it looks like fluffing the cushions even though you hate them, or folding the throw blanket just how she likes it.

And to Greg:Yes, we know. There are a lot of pillows. But no — she’s not stopping anytime soon. 💁‍♀️

And now that the bed’s made (or not — no judgment here), why not treat yourself to something warm, easy, and ridiculously delicious?
